Our Story
Proyecto Alas was born in 2014 years when several women came separately to talk to Sharo Reyes about the problems of emotional abuse they suffered from their partners. As Sharo is a communicator, she decided to create a self-help group where they met every week in libraries or in the homes of some of the participants to attend a small workshop on empowerment, the importance of education, family, etc. and to talk about challenges and goals, as well as to do fun activities together. The group grew and so it was decided to create a large event, the first organized by that original group of Alas women, headed by Sharo Reyes and Gabriela Contreras.
The first events were organized in churches, one of which received great support and was the venue for the event for several years.
2024 Alas Project become a Non-profit hosting for the fisrt time its annual event in Salem, this recurring event that aims to prevent and create awareness about domestic violence experienced by women. Recognizing the gap in accessible resources for marginalized communities in our region, this event focuses specifically on Spanish-speaking women and teens.
